Abstract
Problem: How did the iconic Fallout 1 box cover come to be, and why does the Fallout 2 box cover look so different from what the development team intended?
Approach: Tim Cain recounts the behind-the-scenes battles with Interplay's marketing department over the box art for both Fallout 1 and Fallout 2, drawing on his personal notes and memory.
Findings: The Fallout 1 box cover was Leonard Boyarsky's creation, pushed through despite marketing resistance. For Fallout 2, marketing overrode the team's preferred cover — a tribal-themed piece tying back to Fallout 1 — without consulting Tim Cain, contributing to his departure from the project.
Key insight: When you don't own an IP, you will eventually lose creative control over it — and a game director's role often means fighting battles on behalf of the team, even ones you wouldn't pick for yourself.
