Abstract
Problem: Troika Games is often remembered through the lens of crunch, stress, and financial struggle — but what was the day-to-day culture actually like?
Approach: Tim Cain shares personal anecdotes and memories from Troika's seven-year lifespan, covering the office spaces, team culture, pets, creative inspiration, and the human side of making three cult classic RPGs.
Findings: Despite the well-documented hardships, Troika had a deeply personal, family-like culture — from an office dog who became "VP of Morale" to an in-house daycare, daily Chinese soap opera breaks, and post-gold Counter-Strike sessions. The studio's scrappy, unconventional character extended to everything from their merch (boxer shorts with the logo) to their creative process (inspiration from a 1910 college yearbook and an old Sears catalog).
Key insight: Many former Troika employees describe it as the high point of their career — not despite the chaos, but intertwined with it. The passion and camaraderie made even the crunch feel meaningful.
