Running Meetings

Abstract

Problem: Meetings are widely disliked in the game industry, yet projects derail without them. How should different types of meetings be structured and run effectively?

Approach: Tim Cain categorizes meetings into three types by size and purpose, then shares practical advice on agendas, giving feedback, and who should run meetings.

Findings: Informational (large), directional (medium), and actionable/strike team (small) meetings each serve distinct purposes. All require agendas. Strike teams need candid feedback and active participation. The best meeting leaders are passionate but reluctant to hold power.

Key insight: Every meeting needs an agenda — if you must choose between being called "rambling" and "controlling," always choose controlling.
